Flu Cases Break Records in 2024–25 Season

The nation's hospitals are overcrowded — not just busy, but full. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the 2024–25 flu season is the worst the United States has seen in over 15 years. What is Going On?

The culprit is not a new or mystery virus but rather influenza itself, which this season is striking quicker, dispersing more widely, and causing severe illness across demographics, including children and healthy adults.

The hospitalization rate for the 2024–25 flu season reached 127.1 per 100,000 population—the highest since the 2010–11 season. Patients aged 75 and older have been hit hardest, with a hospitalization rate nearing 600 per 100,000, although all age groups experienced rates 1.8 to 2.8 times higher than median rates seen in prior seasons. Around 89% of hospitalized patients had underlying health conditions. 

Pharmaceutical and Governmental Response
